Warren County is the southern gateway to the Greater Des Moines Metropolitan area. Interstate 35, Union Pacific Railroad and Des Moines International Airport expedite commercial travel through the region which is home to primary employers such as Capital City Fruit, General Mills, Cemen Tech, Alamo Group and Harves Innovation. Simpson College, a four-year liberal arts institute, and Des Moines Area Community College provide higher education, while Warren County’s K-12 education system ranks as one of the best in Iowa.

Weather consists of four seasons with 206 days of sunshine on average each year. Annual precipitation includes 36 inches of rain as well as 30 inches of snow. The local climate is classified as humid continental due to the hot summers, cold winters and wet springs typical of the region.

HISTORY

Warren County was formed in 1846 and named after American Revolutionary War General Joseph Warren. Indianola was founded as the seat of Warren County in 1849 and incorporated in 1863. The town’s name came from a newspaper account of a town in Texas called Indianola.

RECREATION

Several notable celebrations are held in the area including the National Balloon Classic, RAGBRAI, Des Moines Art Festival and Iowa State Fair. The Iowa State Capitol is less than 20 miles from Indianola, IA. Lake Ahquabi is a pristine, man-made lake featuring all kinds of water sports in addition to walking trails for exploration. The National Balloon Museum and Hall of Fame displays over 200 years of ballooning and attracts visitors from around the world. Warren County Historical Society maintains a historic village containing Mount Hope Country School, South River Quake Meeting House and George Washington Carver Museum. Warren County Fair has been a destination for more than 150 years.
